Aichi-Nagoya has long served as one of Japan’s leading manufacturing centers, and yet is blessed with a rich natural environment. Our region has successfully achieved a harmonious balance between economic development and environmental conservation. In 2005, Expo 2005 Aichi Japan was held under the theme of “Nature’s Wisdom.” In 2010, the tenth meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD/COP10) took place in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture. At COP10, delegates adopted the Aichi Targets, aiming for a new era of living in harmony with nature.
These two events have been helping raise public awareness regarding the creation of a sustainable society among the citizens of this region. And in 2014, Aichi-Nagoya will be hosting the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).
Drawing on our collective experience and expertise gained from Expo 2005 and COP10, we at Aichi-Nagoya will work together to make the world conference a great success. In addition, we will take this opportunity to foster human resources who can play leading roles in creating a sustainable society. We sincerely look forward to welcoming many participants from around the world and working together with you all in November 2014.
Hideaki Ohmura, Governor of Aichi Prefecture
Chairman, Aichi-Nagoya Committee for UNESCO World Conference on ESD
